Book Talk: The Psychology of Losing Yourself

We’ve all been there.

One of the main reasons you may enjoy reading is because you have a chance of losing yourself in the fictional world for a given period of time. Suddenly, you’re a child who discovers you’re actually a wizard who has been sent into the human world to be protected from evil. Or you’re a teenage girl in a faraway future where you fighting and dying is a sport and the winner gets to live with fortune for their district.

And after you flip the last page, close the book, and put it on the table next to you, you can’t help but feel like with one flick of your wrist, you can cast a spell. Perhaps, you even find yourself following the characteristics of your favourite character. You might be a little more sarcastic. You might want to dye your hair red, wear dresses, and high heels. You might even change your thoughts, finding one physical attribute to be more attractive than the rest.

1.) Do you like going into books completely blind or do you prefer having an idea or a sense of understanding of what you’re about to read?

I tend to like to know what I’m reading because then I would know if it fit my preference at the moment. I’m a strong believer that our perspectives and opinions of books are affected by how we feel at the time of reading. So, if I want to read a mystery because I’m feeling kind of dark and gritty, I’ll pick one off the shelf and read that instead of forcing myself to read a new release of some book.

Book Review: Stubborn Hearts by Melanie Munton

Title: Stubborn Hearts
Author: Melanie Munton
Publication: April 26th 2016
Pages: 128
Synopsis: What they say is true…never get involved with someone you work with.

David Edelman was an arrogant prick. At least that’s what Claire Stevens thought. She didn’t have many enemies but if she were forced to make a list, he would certainly be at the top of it. So, when she walked into her new job and saw him standing there, she’d been two seconds away from turning tail and running. But she needed the job and she never backed away from a challenge.

Claire Stevens was a stuck-up brat. He couldn’t believe that out of all the people in the city, she was the one hired to be his new assistant. The woman who drove him crazy. It was campaign season and this election was the one he and Clay had been working toward. He couldn’t allow his frustrating and maddeningly gorgeous assistant to distract him.

But then one night, that all changed.

It was just supposed to be a no-strings-attached, never-to-be-repeated-again kind of night. They weren’t supposed to actually feel anything. They weren’t supposed to remember how each other felt. And they sure as hell weren’t supposed to want to do it again.

But they did.

And they denied it, they fought it. But after a while, it wasn’t enough. They knew they were going to have to face up to their feelings. They were going to have to stop fighting and give in. Which wasn’t going to be easy. For Stubborn Hearts, it never was.

[Mini Book Reviews] Three Little Lies Series by Sara Ney

26012886

Title: Things Liars Say
Author: Sara Ney
Publication: July 30th 2015
Pages: 185
Synopsis: Lies, lies, lies; everybody tells them….

Greyson Keller didn’t intend to lie; it just came out that way. So when the object of that lie shows up on her doorstep, she is confused, shocked, and embarrassed.

Calvin Thompson is an Ivy Leaguer, attending University over an hour away, playing rugby and basically not giving a crap. So imagine his surprise when some guy named Greyson begins rumors online that they’re dating — the only logical solution is to drive an hour and confront him…

Be there when Greyson and Cal finally meet face-to-face because.
Sparks. Will. Fly.

Yes, sparks fly. That’s why this book is intended for those 17+
Foul language, and sexual content.

Rating: 2/5
Thoughts:

I wanted to like this book sooooooooooooooooooo badly.

At the beginning I thought it was pretty cute because Greyson was so shocked that Cal Thompson was real but then quickly, I got irritated by Cal for being so stubborn. He seemed so cold towards Greyson when she was clearly flirting with him that it made me think he was uncomfortable because he still thought she was a full on stalker.

What to expect from this book? A chunk of emails and text messages and a guy who can’t believe he’s sexy.

My final recommendation? Give it a read if you’re interested. I’m going to move onto the next story and hope for the best.

Title: Things Liars Hide
Author: Sara Ney
Publication: November 17th 2015
Pages: 137
Synopsis: Secrets, secrets, everybody has them…
Tabitha Thompson is many things, but a liar isn’t one of them. Unless you count the sexy secret she’s spent a year hiding from everyone: her friends, her family. The secret she never counted on anyone discovering…

One chance encounter.

One clumsy mistake.

One sexy discovery.

Now, only Collin Keller stands in the way of her secret–and everyone else. And he just may be the one who ruins it all…

Tabitha Thompson, you secretive little sneak…

Rating: 3/5
Thoughts:

Main female heroine was really annoying and the conversations sounded unnatural and too puffed. Sara Ney does not write conversations well nor does she add angst into the mix. Tabitha (our heroine) is irrational, jumping to conclusions. Skip this one.

28841044Title: Things Liars Fake
Author: Sara Ney
Publication: January 31st 2016
Pages: 139
Synopsis: What if…

Someone you barely knew asked you for a favor.

What if…

They needed you to be something you weren’t, in exchange for nothing. Unless you count a mouth full of lies and a half-broken heart. Faker. Pretender. Liar. There are worse things to be called.

So would you do it? Would you?

Daphne Winthrop did.

And you’re about to find out what happens in the end.

Rating: 4/5
Thoughts:

While not the highest rating of 5/5, this book promises adorableness between two unlikely characters who find themselves drawn to each other. Our hero is a dork. He wears suspenders, plaid shirts, peacoats, glasses, and doesn’t scream the fashion forward model but I can’t help but imagine him being dorkishly cute despite what everyone says. Our heroine is gorgeous. She has amazing green eyes, nice body, and a sweet personality. And she’s also a dork. For all things Sci-fi. I really enjoyed this book out of the rest of the series because it had fluff, nice sex scenes, and a feeling of longing. I wanted for both of them to admit their feelings for each other so badly at times. I suggest to skip both the first novels and read this one instead.

The only major problem I had with it? Sara Ney describes a vagina as “lady bits.”

Pages: 237

Synopsis: Just friends.
We’re just friends.
No, really. She’s just my best friend…

Arizona Turner has been my best friend since fourth grade, even when we “hated” each other. We’ve been there for one another through first kisses, first “times,” and we’ve been each other’s constant when good relationships turned bad. (We even went to colleges that were minutes away from each other…)

Throughout the years, and despite what anyone says, we’ve never crossed the line.

Never thought about it.
Never wanted to.

Until one night changed everything.
At least, it should’ve …

Just friends.
We’re just friends.
I’m only saying this until I figure out if she’s still “just” my best friend…
