Title: The Ghost Road
Author: Charis Cotter
Publication: September 4th 2018
Synopsis

Ghosts, a family curse, buried secrets — and two girls who have to figure it all out. A new book from an acclaimed author, for fans of Coraline, Doll Bones and The Night Gardener.

For the first time, Ruth is heading to Newfoundland to stay with family she’s never met instead of spending the summer traveling with her dad. When she arrives, she finds Newfoundland is very different from her life in Toronto–people there are much more friendly, but also superstitious, believing in ghosts and The Sight and family curses. Ruth’s cousin Ruby is also staying for the summer, and the two discover they have a lot in common: they both lost their moms when they were two years old, they’re the same age and they even like the same food. But while Ruby believes in spirits and fairies, Ruth believes in science and cold, hard facts.

When they find ominous information on some tombstones in the local cemetery, Ruth and Ruby start investigating their family’s past and discover that twin girls are born in every generation, and every set of twins dies young, leaving their children without mothers. What’s more, one of the twins always has The Sight and can see the Ghost Road that leads to the mysterious lost settlement of Slippers Cove. What happened there? What does it have to do with their family? And who is the ghostly presence that keeps visiting Ruth late at night?

The answers lie somewhere along the Ghost Road . . . if they can only find it

MY REVIEW: 4/5 STARS

I received an ARC in exchange for a honest review from Penguin Random House Canada!

Do not judge a book by it’s cover nor should you ever judge a book by it’s direct audience age. I must admit when I first received the copy of The Ghost Road, I was very skeptical. I wondered if I would actually enjoy it because young readers or middle school age novels weren’t really my thing. I find the writing to be too simplistic at times but Charis Cotter has a way with words that made it a perfect blend of middle grade and young adult level of writing. The cover may not be the most attractive thing you’ve seen but it’s really the inside that counts! I’m serious.

I Forced Myself to Watch To All the Boys I’ve Ever Loved Before (A Review)

c

boy

The letters are out.

More like the movie is out.

Well, the movie’s been out since August 17th so unless you have been hiding under a rock or whatever that people hide under nowadays, you would know this. It has literally eaten up my entire Instagram feed and probably Twitter feed (I wouldn’t know because I don’t use…Twitter). Anyways, if you’ve read my previous post about To All the Boys, you’ll probably know I wasn’t ever a huge fan of the series nor was I pumped to watch the darn thing.

But like many Friday (and weekend nights and weekdays), where my friends manage to convince me to drink even though I really shouldn’t, I was peer pressured into doing something I kind of didn’t want to do. And that includes watching this movie.

I had an opinion of it before I walked in. I didn’t expect the best acting nor did I expect the movie to follow the book because come on. When do movie adaptations ever follow the book word by word. ANYWAYS, so my opinion wasn’t so good and I know you’re probably waiting for me to tell you how this movie CHANGED MY LIFE and OMG I HAVE TO REWATCH IT 4 BILLION TIMES TO FULLY ABSORB HOW GOOD IT WAS.

MY RATING: 3/5 STARS

I received a copy from Thomas Allen and Sons in exchange for a honest review.

After hearing a lot of my friends recommending me to read Melt For You, I was more than excited to receive a copy for review. Who doesn’t love the trope of someone who needs to be ‘taught’ how to express themselves sexually and of course, finally putting the end of unrequited love! I enjoyed the idea of this book so I dove right into thinking I’ll hit a romantic comedy winner.

hot

MY RATING: 4.5/5 STARS

I received a copy from Thomas Allen & Sons in exchange for a honest review.

Hot Asset is my first book from Lauren Layne in a very long time. I read a couple of her books back in 2016 but I never went back to her. Boy! Did I miss out? Or was Hot Asset just so good that it makes me want to visit all her older titles to see what other treasures and gems I can find?

Hot Asset tells the story of Ian, an extremely good looking, smart, wealthy playboy who happens to be one of Wall Street’s famous investment advisers. Things are looking pretty good for him. He can get any female with a crook of his finger and he’s surrounded by two of his best friends, Kennedy and Matt. The only thing that dampens his mood would be the SEC agent sent to investigate whether the allegations that Ian has committed white-collar crime. Our heroine, Lara, is strong, fierce, and will not back down from achieving her dreams of one day landing a position in FBI. But first, she must crack the case, prove to everyone that Ian may not be as flawless as everyone thinks he is.

double

MY RATING: 3/5 STARS

I received a copy from Thomas Allen and Sons in exchange for a honest review.

Dealing Double was one of those romantic comedies that promise a lot for its synopsis and adorable cover but sadly, I found myself not liking it as much as I wanted to. The book follows Gabby Knight, an archaeologist, and also, daughter of a crime king. She’s been living her life incognito for the most part because of her father’s checkered past and if I didn’t tell you right now, you would probably think this book would be written in a darker note. Surprisingly, Tamra found a way to make it light and fun for readers. Gabby’s father turned out to be nicer, warmer, and kind of normal except for the fact that he commits a lot of crime to earn the big bucks.

dark

MY RATING: 4/5 STARS

I received an ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

When approached with the idea to review this book, I hesitated because I don’t normally pick up romantic suspense. I know. It’s strange but I choose actively not to read them because I felt that plots can be too complicated for my brain to follow especially when I am a guilty reader who tends to skim pages. If I skimmed too much, I may miss an important part of the plot that would take the book from a three star rating to a four or five star rating. So in all fairness to all romantic suspense novels, I try to avoid them.

Book Review: Burning Up by Jennifer Blackwood

Title: Burning Up
Author: Jennifer Blackwood
Publication: May 8th 2018
Pages: 253
Synopsis:

USA Today bestselling author Jennifer Blackwood fans the flames of desire in her smoking-hot series about firefighters and the women who want them…

Unemployed schoolteacher Erin Jenkins is back in Portland, the town she hasn’t called home for more than a decade. It’s not the way she wants to spend her last days of summer: in between jobs and avoiding her mother’s snooping by escaping to the ice-cream aisle. But when the opportunity arises for her to accompany her brother’s best friend—her lifetime crush—to a wedding, summer gets a whole lot more interesting.

Firefighter and single dad Jake Bennett has built a nice, safe wall around his heart—no romance, no getting burned. That doesn’t mean he’s ruling out a fling. Considering Erin’s visit is temporary, they’re the perfect fit for a scorching no-strings one-night stand. Or two. Or five. Until the worst thing happens: Erin and Jake are feeling more. Damn that four-letter word.

Now their hearts are on the line, and when their smoldering summer comes to a close, it’s going to be harder than ever to put out the fire.

MY RATING: 4/5 STARS

I received a copy from Thomas Allen & Sons in exchange for an honest review.

Okay, so who loves firefighters? Spoiler alert: Me. I love them but I don’t read a lot of them because strangely, it’s very hard for me to find print romances featuring the beefy hunks that can break down my doors and save my butt when a hot crisis hits. So when I was asked if I wanted to review Jennifer Blackwood’s newest book in her Flirting with Fire series, of course, I said yes!
