Book Review: Dear Dwayne, With Love by Eliza Gordon

Title: Dear Dwayne, With Love
Author: Eliza Gordon
Publication: January 23rd 2018
Pages: 375
Synopsis:

Wannabe actress Dani Steele’s résumé resembles a cautionary tale on how not to be famous. She’s pushing thirty and stuck in a dead-end insurance job, and her relationship status is holding at uncommitted. With unbearably perfect sisters and a mother who won’t let her forget it, Dani has two go-tos for consolation: maple scones and a blog in which she pours her heart out to her celebrity idol. He’s the man her father never was, no boyfriend will ever be—and not so impossible a dream as one might think. When Dani learns that he’s planning a fund-raising event where the winning amateur athlete gets a walk-on in his new film, she decides to trade pastries and self-doubt for running shoes and a sexy British trainer with adorable knees.

But when Dani’s plot takes an unexpected twist, she realizes that her happy ending might have to be improvised—and that proving herself to her idol isn’t half as important as proving something to herself.

I was approached to review this book and honestly, I didn’t read the synopsis when I said yes. I saw the adorable cover featuring the donuts and dumbbells and saw the title and just knew in my gut this book was for me. It was only until my friend pointed out to me that it was about diary entries to Dwayne ‘the rock’ Johnson did my gusto falter. A bit. I mean, really? A book featuring diary entries written to a real life celebrity?

But yup.

It happened. I read them. And I loved them.

I was provided a complimentary copy from the author & marketing team in exchange for an honest review.

Okay, so I know what a lot of you guys might be thinking. I normally don’t reach for books like this one and you guys make a fair point. I reach for steamy romances, young adult contemporaries, or like my newly discovered love–young adult fantasy novels. It is also within fair reason why I would personally be hesitant about reading this on in particular.

And I may have the same reasons as you do. While the cover features gorgeous artwork, it doesn’t necessarily look like a well polished book you’ll find in your bookstore. The title is kind of put in the bottom–discarded like it will ruin the cover even though the title is one of the most important parts to a book and the author’s name is squished in the bottom left corner. I know we shouldn’t be judging books by their covers but in a world where our attention spans last no longer than it takes to send out a tweet–a beautiful cover matters.

I’m Deaf. What most people view as a disadvantage, I see as an advantage.
I feel my way through life in my 1969 Ford Fairlane. The vibrations and speed sustain me, the race track is where I dominate.
I thought racing was all I needed to survive…but I was wrong.

*Presley*
Music is my life. I inhale the melody and breathe in the lyrics.
That was until I met someone that opened my eyes to a new culture. Who knew all it would take was silence for me to really experience music.

When Silence and sound collide it creates an explosion of the senses.

I was given an ARC by the author in exchange for an honest review.

I was approached by Jaci Wheeler, herself, to review one of her latest releases coming out early 2018 and I was actually pretty stoked to read it. The synopsis of Silent Song seemed just like what I was always in the mood for. A romance filled with more complicated issues and discussing topics most books do not cover.

Such as people who are deaf.

This is my second book from Kadie Scott and after falling absolutely in love with ‘The Wrong Kind of Compatible’ which is the first book in the Love Undercover series, I was excited to hear about this new release!

And the hype definitely lived up to it. Ever since the first book, I fell in love with Max as a character. Who doesn’t love a best friend who is always there for you and there to tell you to get your act together and go for the girl?

Title: Sweet Captivity
Author: Julia Sykes
Publication: September 12th 2017
Pages: 368
Synopsis:

I don’t like to be touched. I’m the hacker-geek-goddess of the FBI. When I’m hiding behind my screen, I’m a safe distance from everyone; isolated, powerful. No man has ever touched me, but when I’m captured by Colombian drug lord Andrés Moreno, I no longer have the right to refuse. He’s scarred and scary, and his cruel brother Cristian has tasked him with breaking me. I try to fight, but I can’t escape his strong arms and harsh discipline. He demands that I accept his touch, and my virgin body can’t help but respond to his masterful manipulations.

The longer I remain trapped with him, the more I come to suspect that I’m not the only captive in his brother’s home. Andrés’ scars go deeper than the wicked furrows carved into his flesh, his pain reflected in the dark demands he imposes upon me. His obsession is twisted and wrong, but maybe I’m twisted, too.

Do I want to be rescued from him? Or is he the one who truly needs saving?

Let’s be honest. After reading the synopsis, you kind of already know what to expect from Sweet Captivity by Julia Sykes. You’re going to probably get a story that features a heroine who may experience Stockholm syndrome and because this is a romance, you’ll probably expect an implausible ending that will make you feel unsettled.

I did a bad thing.

I did a really bad thing.
I’m not a bad person, I swear. I just made a few mistakes.

Mistake number one was agreeing to rent my hotel out to an insufferable a**hole, named Aden Smith.
Mistake number two was ignoring his threats to sue me when he handed over a list of items he deemed “unacceptable”.
Mistake number three was diving into the pool to save his life when he fell. It would have been less complicated to hide his body.

When the hospital refuses to let me know how he is, without permission from his immediate family, I panic.

Claiming to be his wife might be my biggest mistake yet—especially when he believes me!

He might have been the one drowning, but I’m sinking in a bed of lies and going down fast—and there’s not a rescue in sight.

Complete Standalone FULL LENGTH NOVEL Pages listed will not be representative of the final product. Happy Ending, Laugh Out Loud Comedy and an Alpha Hero with his eyes only on one woman all contained inside.

MY RATING: 4/5 STARS

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

In Too Deep follows the troupe of enemies to lovers romance so if you’re not down for a hero who is a major a** to the heroine then this book isn’t for you. Seriously, I don’t know what has gotten into authors nowadays but they’re making the heroes really hard to accept, like, and ultimately forgive for the behaviour they pull in the story. It’s revolting at times so that’s why there’s a big star knocked off in this book.

I’m adding more stars because this is been the first book in a long time where it actually made me laugh. And it’s not laugh out loud all the time so don’t come back to me with pitchforks when you’re not laughing from page one. It’s just a chapter in this story that made me laugh. A lot. And I applaud Jordan Marie for it.

From This Moment by Melanie Harlow

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Publishing Date: October 10th, 2017

It was like seeing a ghost.

When my late husband’s twin brother moves back to our small town, I want to avoid him. Everything about Wes reminds me of the man I lost and the life we’d planned together, and after eighteen long months struggling just to get out of bed, I’m finally doing okay. I have a new job, an amazing support group, and a beautiful five-year-old daughter to parent. I don’t want to go backward.

But I’m drawn to him, too. He understands my grief and anger and guilt like no one else—and I understand his. Before long, that understanding becomes desire, and that desire becomes uncontrollable.

He says he doesn’t care what people think, and love can never be wrong. But life has taught me its cruelest lesson–love doesn’t always win.

If only my heart would believe it.

BOOK REVIEW: After We Fall by Melanie Harlow

Book Review!

Title: After We Fall
Author: Melanie Harlow
Publication: November 28th 2016
Pages: 355
Synopsis:

Jack Valentini isn’t my type.

Sexy, brooding cowboys are fine in the movies, but in real life, I prefer a suit and tie. Proper manners. A close shave.

Jack might be gorgeous, but he’s also scruffy, rugged, and rude. He wants nothing to do with a “rich city girl” like me, and he isn’t afraid to say so.

But I’ve got a PR job to do for his family’s farm, so he’s stuck with me and I’m stuck with him. His glares. His moods. His tight jeans. His muscles.

His huge, hard muscles.

Pretty soon there’s a whole different kind of tension between us, the kind that has me misbehaving in barns, trees, and pickup trucks. I’ve never done anything so out of character—but it feels too good to stop.

And the more I learn about the grieving ex-Army sergeant, the better I understand him. Losing his wife left him broken and bitter and blaming himself. He doesn’t think he deserves a second chance at happiness.

But he’s wrong.

I don’t need to be his first love. If only he’d let me be his last.

ACTUAL RATING: 3.5/5

This was my third read from Melanie Harlow. I have yet to review the previous books I have read: If You Were Mine & From this Moment but I’ll get on it shortly. A quick summary of my reviews will be that I’m not really that impressed about the conflicts Melanie created for characters to not be possible to be together. And I’ll explain.

Okay, so since this was my third read, I must say that this was one of the more interesting ones simply because of Jack. I don’t know what to tell you except I guess I really like rude pricks like Jack and bubbly characters like Margot. I was digging it. I just had to keep reading to see how Jack and Margot interacted with each other. One, who was colder than ice. And the other one who was like what is your problem dude?
