If you’re a reader, you’ve probably experienced this dreadful moment before in your reading life. Suddenly, all books that excited you now bore you to death. When you try to read, words skip over each other and for some fantastically annoying reason, you can’t remember the main character’s freaking name!
It’s like the plot is physically slowing you down. You’re being dragged through the story and you can’t help but think that if you weren’t experiencing this awful reading slump, you would be actually enjoying this book.
So? How do you actually beat your reading slump and is it actually possible? Read more to view the tips I have for you and I can only hope it helps!
Skip the book
No, really. If the book isn’t sticking with you just skip it and put it down. It doesn’t matter if it’s the latest craze everyone is absolutely raving about on instagram or goodreads or wordpress. If it’s causing you distress during your reading slump, this book isn’t going to help you beat it.
Skim books
You know all those books on your bookshelf that you haven’t read yet? You probably forgot what most of them were about so why don’t you take some time out of your Sunday or your day and just skim through some chapters and figure out if it sticks and clicks.
If it doesn’t, move on to the next book without any worry.
And if you are extremely committed to finish one book before moving onto the next, breakdown your guards, and skim the rest of the book. I’m telling you right now that you should never feel guilty about skimming a book. Life’s too short for books that are lackluster.
Read shorter things
Are you obsessed with finishing your goodreads challenge? Are you worried about never finishing that big goal you set yourself up for?
Well, here’s something you might not have realized. Read shorter things. Go on a hunt for shorter books. Novellas, short stories, free ebooks Google Play puts up on their phone app.ย Even if they’re horrible, follow tip #2 and totally skim.
Stop reading
Yup! You’ve read it correctly. Just skip reading. Free yourself from the burden of your goodreads challenge and give yourself a break. Go watch a movie on Netflix or go watch a whole season of some random television show! Go do some homework!
Once you relieve yourself of the pressure from reading everyday, your brain will soon thank you. You’ll find yourself more relaxed and soon enough, you’ll be yearning to read again because every reader knows that nothing can replace the fulfillment of reading a good book.
Not even a really hot guy in that one movie you saw on Netflix late at night.
I recently recovered from my reading slump. It lasted about 7 years ๐ Great tips, some of which I tried for myself and made it through and into the books again! yeeyyy! ๐

I normally get into reading slumps after I do another reread of Harry Potter. I can not read anything at all except for HP fanfiction (don’t worry, the good kind). Good suggestions!

AHHHHHHHH nothing can beat harry potter to be honest. it’s legitimately the best young adult fantasy books out there!

I usually don’t find myself in a reading slump because I know when one is coming and I know which kind of books take me out of it or prevent me from one. Great tips!

That’s so amazing of you to know that about yourself!!! I know historical romance really starts my heart up again but when even that it doesn’t work, i’m totally in slump mood. ha

I’ve never actually had a reading slump that I can remember! I feel very lucky to be able to say that because most people in the bookworm community have. It honestly surprises me that I haven’t, but I’m okay with that. ๐

Great tips! ๐ I was in a book slump for about a year or so. I feel so ashamed for reading so little books last year.

Don’t feel ashamed! Life is for living and just because you’re a reader, it doesn’t mean that you have to read every day!
