If you’re a reader, you’ve probably experienced this dreadful moment before in your reading life. Suddenly, all books that excited you now bore you to death. When you try to read, words skip over each other and for some fantastically annoying reason, you can’t remember the main character’s freaking name!
It’s like the plot is physically slowing you down. You’re being dragged through the story and you can’t help but think that if you weren’t experiencing this awful reading slump, you would be actually enjoying this book.
So? How do you actually beat your reading slump and is it actually possible? Read more to view the tips I have for you and I can only hope it helps!
Skip the book
No, really. If the book isn’t sticking with you just skip it and put it down. It doesn’t matter if it’s the latest craze everyone is absolutely raving about on instagram or goodreads or wordpress. If it’s causing you distress during your reading slump, this book isn’t going to help you beat it.
You know all those books on your bookshelf that you haven’t read yet? You probably forgot what most of them were about so why don’t you take some time out of your Sunday or your day and just skim through some chapters and figure out if it sticks and clicks.
If it doesn’t, move on to the next book without any worry.
And if you are extremely committed to finish one book before moving onto the next, breakdown your guards, and skim the rest of the book. I’m telling you right now that you should never feel guilty about skimming a book. Life’s too short for books that are lackluster.
Read shorter things
Are you obsessed with finishing your goodreads challenge? Are you worried about never finishing that big goal you set yourself up for?
Well, here’s something you might not have realized. Read shorter things. Go on a hunt for shorter books. Novellas, short stories, free ebooks Google Play puts up on their phone app. Even if they’re horrible, follow tip #2 and totally skim.
Yup! You’ve read it correctly. Just skip reading. Free yourself from the burden of your goodreads challenge and give yourself a break. Go watch a movie on Netflix or go watch a whole season of some random television show! Go do some homework!
Once you relieve yourself of the pressure from reading everyday, your brain will soon thank you. You’ll find yourself more relaxed and soon enough, you’ll be yearning to read again because every reader knows that nothing can replace the fulfillment of reading a good book.
Not even a really hot guy in that one movie you saw on Netflix late at night.
